Choosing a health club :

When choosing a health or fitness club facility, you should select the one that best meets your health status and needs. Ask yourself, club staffs or other club members these questions to help determine which is the safest and best-suited for you:

Does it give a health history questionnaire or screening before you enroll?

Does it give a fitness test?

Do staff members have an educational degree in exercise science, exercise physiology or a health-related field? Or are they certified by a credible health or exercise association?

Are the club, classes and gym equipment clean and well maintained?

Does it have a shower and changing rooms?

Does the variety, amount and availability of exercise equipment suit your needs?

Is the climate controlled?

Are there how-to signs explaining proper machine or exercise technique?

Do staff members know what to do in case of a life-threatening emergency?

Does flooring minimize the risk of injury?

If you have known cardiovascular disease or other serious health problems, does it require a medical release or a signed doctor's permission slip including his or her name, phone number, address and fax number for emergencies?
